Title: Court Warning Given To Housing Company Tenant

Date: 25/04/08

Court action has been taken by The Gateshead Housing Company against a tenant whose son dealt drugs from their home.

Friars Dene Road

Margaret Webber, 48, of Friars Dene Road, Felling, agreed a two-year postponed possession order following the conviction of her son, John Webber.

The action comes as part of the company’s commitment to crack down on disorderly tenants to ensure that other tenants can feel safe in their own homes, without worrying about anti-social, racial and criminal behaviour.

A judge approved the order after hearing how Margaret Webber’s son, John, was convicted of affray and three counts of supplying cocaine, a Class A drug.

The postponed possession order, which runs until March 2010, prohibits Margaret Webber, her friends, relatives and anyone else living in or visiting the property, from doing anything that is considered to be a breach of the tenancy agreement.

The order means that if any further incidents occur between now and March 2010, the housing company can seek a permanent eviction from the property.

Bill Fullen, Chief Executive of The Gateshead Housing Company is pleased to be working with Gateshead Council, the police and the courts to reduce anti-social behaviour, and has vowed to keep on doing so.

He said: “The Gateshead Housing Company wants to give local people the homes they deserve, through our £1m a week programme of major improvements.

“But it also wants to help people feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods, whatever their age, race or background.

“Tenants and leaseholders have told us previously that dealing with anti-social behaviour on estates is their number one priority.

“We intend to carry on making sure that the small minority of tenants who cause such misery, nuisance and annoyance to local people are dealt with severely, and show that there is no place for anti-social behaviour in Gateshead.”

In the past year, The Gateshead Housing Company’s Neighbourhood Relations Team has worked to get several anti-social tenants evicted, and also gained postponed possession orders and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) against a number of residents across the borough.

The company has a number of other cases pending, which could result in further action against anti-social tenants and their families.

Residents wanting to report anti-social behaviour should contact their nearest housing office or the company’s Neighbourhood Relations Team on:
