Neighbourhood Wardens

Neighbourhood Wardens – what are they?

Skip to more pages in this section

Neighbourhood Wardens are part of a uniformed service provided by Gateshead Council to provide support and reassurance to communities.

Neighbourhood Wardens undertake a wide range of duties.

In their distinctive red and black uniforms, Neighbourhood Wardens deal with low-level disorder and anti-social behaviour and have an environmental enforcement role which enables them to issue £50 Fixed Penalty Notices for the offences of littering, dog fouling, graffiti and fly posting and to require an offender's name and address.

Wardens also work with other Gateshead Council and The Gateshead Housing Company services to resolve problem in neigbourhoods, reporting for example, defective street lighting and fly tipping and providing the community with information and acting as a point of contact.

They are ideally placed to provide useful information to Gateshead Council, the Police, The Gateshead Housing Company and other agencies on a range of issues, and provide visible reassurance that someone is looking out for their neighbourhoods.

Although Wardens play an important role as part of neighbourhood policing teams, they are not a substitute for the Police who will continue to provide their normal services.
