Abandoned Vehicles
In certain circumstances, the Council has powers to remove abandoned vehicles. Click here to find out more and request this service.
Bulky Household Waste
Gateshead Council will remove household waste that is too bulky to fit into your wheeled bin.
If you live in a multi-storey flat, items can only be collected from the ground floor. If you do not live on the ground floor and are a council tenant please contact the Gateshead Housing Company. Otherwise ring 0191 433 7000 and we will tell you what arrangements can be made.
Dog Warden
The law requires local councils to treat unaccompanied dogs on public land as strays and to remove them because of the potential problems they can cause.
Graffiti
Gateshead Council is responsible for the borough's public buildings and network of all adopted roads and highways, bridges and pathways.
Pest Control
Gateshead Council provides a control service for pests considered to be a risk to public health or food safety including rats, house mice, cockroaches and fleas.
Pest control services are provided free of charge to tenants of The Gateshead Housing Company.

Refuse Collection
The Council provides all households with a wheeled bin, subject to certain conditions. All household waste contained in the bin is collected weekly. Report a missing bin or request a replacement here.
Roads
and Paths
The Council is responsible for the borough's public buildings and network of all adopted roads and highways, bridges and pathways.
Rubbish Dumping (Illegal)
Upon request, the Council will investigate all incidents of fly tipping and where appropriate arrange for the removal and disposal of illegally dumped rubbish from highways, footpaths and pedestrian areas and other areas of land owned by the Council within 5 working days of a request being made.
Security
Gateshead Council works closely with the Northumbria Police to provide a property security service to a variety of the Council groups and operate the Business Watch scheme on the East Gateshead Industrial Estate. We also offer advice and recommendations on how to improve security.
Street Lighting
Gateshead Council undertakes the maintenance of the boroughs streetlights, subways and street furniture by:
- Carrying out improvements to highways as resources allow
- Carrying out streetlight night scouting patrols
- Providing and maintaining street furniture including seats and signs
