Decent Homes Programme
In 2000, the Government made a commitment to bring all public sector homes up to a decent standard to, ‘ensure that all social housing meets set standards of decency by 2010’.
This placed a responsibility on councils to set a timetable to ensure these targets are met, and in Gateshead led to the setting up of The Gateshead Housing Company in January 2004.
The programme of improvement works that was agreed with our customers was dependent on the company achieving its ‘two-star’ status from the Audit Commission.
This was achieved in November 2005, meaning up to £232million of extra funding can be invested into thousands of homes across the borough over the next five years.
The company has developed partnerships with Gateshead Council’s Local Environmental Services, Frank Haslam Milan Ltd and Morrison Facilities Services Limited to deliver these improvements.
