This website is run by The Gateshead Housing Company. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. We’ve made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We are working on a new website and do not intend to amend the old content on this site. However, when we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Navigation and accessing information

There’s no way to skip the repeated content in the page header (for example, a ‘skip to main content’ option).

Interactive tools and transactions

Our “MyTGHCaccount” service and our repair reporting service are built and hosted through third party software and ‘skinned’ to look like our website.

Registering, viewing and bidding for a new home – these actions are all carried out through third party software.

Making a payment is carried out through third party software.

Disproportionate burden

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. We are building a new website and do not intend to amend the old content on this site. However, any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

We’ve assessed the cost of fixing these issues and believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment when the supplier contracts are up for renewal.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are in the process of building a new website, which will have significantly increased compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard. The only non-compliance we envisage will be caused by uploading old PDFs.

This new website will be live no later than summer 2021.
