The Gateshead Housing Company is warning residents to be on their guard following reports of bogus callers in the south of Gateshead.

The company is passing on reports to Northumbria Police of a man visiting properties in Vigo, Birtley to carry out work on guttering in houses it manages.

Bogus caller cardThe housing company is not carrying out any such unplanned work in the area and is asking tenants to be extra careful about unexpected visitors offering to carry out work on their homes.

Neil Bouch, Director of Customers and Communities, said: “All of our employees and contractors take great care when dealing with tenants or leaseholders and will always show an identity card when visiting homes.

“We would never visit homes to carry out an inspection or repair without scheduling an appointment with tenants first and employees or contractors will always carry ID.

“Customers should not allow anyone in their home they are suspicious of.

“Then they should call us, Gateshead Council or Northumbria Police to confirm the employee or contractor is genuine.”

Concerned customers can call the housing company on 0191 433 5353 to check callers are genuine, and if in any doubt should refuse access to the property.

‘No ID? No way!’ postcards, which highlight useful telephone numbers for concerned customers, are sent to customers on a regular basis.

Customers can pick up extra postcards free of charge from their nearest housing office.
