A much-loved community centre in West Gateshead has been given a fresh new look, thanks to The Gateshead Housing Company and its partners.
Barmoor Hub is a multi-purpose centre that provides a programme of activities to promote the physical and mental wellbeing of residents in Ryton and Crawcrook, with an emphasis on the needs of children and young people.
The centre asked for help to remove rotten and unsightly fascia and cladding to the sports hall external wall and fire exit doors, replacing them with UPVC.
Hearing that the Hub is the only community building in the area that can support a wide range of activities for people of all ages, the housing company was keen to help.
The Gateshead Housing Company agreed to provide £5,000 of in-kind work from its Community Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. Mears carried out the work, making the building both safer and smarter.
Housing Manager Ian Burton said: “We are always keen to help our customers lead healthy, happy lives, and Barmoor Hub does a great deal for the physical health and mental wellbeing of more than 350 local people.”
And Nancy Charlesworth of Barmoor Hub added: “We’re thrilled with the work – the building looks immaculate and we’re getting lots of positive comments from centre users.”
Jon Goodwin, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at the Community Foundation, said: “I’m firmly of the belief that time and expertise are as important as money to the voluntary sector. That’s why the in-kind support offered through this fund is vitally important.”
The Hub’s own programme includes Junior Football Coaching, Junior Youth Club, Family Keep Fit classes, Quilting, and Camera Club.
External users include the University of the Third Age, Gateshead Council’s Adult Learning Programme, Leisure Services and Children’s Centre.
The Gateshead Housing Company Community Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland is supported by Gateshead Council and Mears.
Since 2006, the Community Fund has awarded cash and in-kind grants totalling over £500,000 to more than 120 groups across Gateshead.
Groups in Gateshead wanting to find out more about applying for a grant should call the Community Foundation on 0191 222 0945 or email email@example.com to find out about future deadlines.
