A new community bakery in the Nest estate recently celebrated its official opening, with an event for local residents.

The bakery is part of a larger community space, which was created by converting two disused retail units. The space hosts weekly groups, one-off events, and learning and social activities.

The Gateshead Housing Company helped to fund the bakery, providing the money to buy kitchen equipment through its recently launched Sustainable Communities Fund.

The fund is a joint venture between the housing company and Gateshead Council and aims to increase pride in neighbourhoods by improving the local environment.

Kevin Roberts, Housing Manager, said: “This is a really worthwhile initiative, with many development opportunities. The bakery will help residents learn to make their own healthy, affordable food, and will also bring people together, helping to build community spirit.”
