Blaydon Youth and Community Centre applied to the housing company’s Community Fund for a new fridge and dishwasher, plus the necessary alterations to the kitchen layout.

When The Gateshead Housing Company heard that the centre’s Guidepost project provides lunch for around 50 people at a time, and that their youth clubs regularly include healthy eating and cooking sessions, it agreed that the fund should cover the £1,367 cost of the renovations.

Blaydon Youth and Community Centre is a registered charity, delivering a variety of learning and educational activities to young people and adults from a new-build centre in Blaydon which is on a 20-year lease from Gateshead Council.

The organisation delivers Youth Club sessions to young people aged 7-19; they also have an inclusive club for young people aged 13-25 with learning difficulties and disabilities. The centre also has a pre-school for children aged 2-5 and an after-school club for primary school aged children, including holiday care.

Now that the centre has its improved kitchen facilities, they hope to introduce an older persons’ lunch club and a Saturday breakfast youth club.

After School Club Co-ordinator Jade Cunningham said, “We’re really grateful for the new appliances.

“The Community Centre hosts a wide range of activities that require catering – and the domestic fridge we had just wasn’t big enough!”

Ian Burton, Housing Manager for The Gateshead Housing Company, said, “We were delighted to help.

“Blaydon Youth and Community Centre’s services are popular and effective, tackling poverty, healthy eating and social inclusion across the whole community.
