A Gateshead charity which supports elderly and disabled people in the Teams and Bensham area has received a grant from The Gateshead Housing Company’s Community Fund.

The £4,790 grant from the fund, at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, has enabled Teams and Bensham Community Care to buy new furniture for their lounge and dining space.

The new furniture includes “easy glide” tables and chairs.

The centre operates a range of activities for older people such as arts and crafts, bingo, card making, domino competitions and quizzes.

There is also an opportunity to enjoy a nutritious two-course meal in the communal lounge and regular party days to celebrate special occasions.

Claire Tallentire, Estate Officer for the housing company, said: “The grant has given the group a fantastic opportunity to enhance the experience of its members.

“The dining area is now much more comfortable for members who sit for extended periods of time, particularly those whose mobility is restricted.”

Jon Goodwin, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at the Community Foundation, said: “We were delighted to make this grant. Teams and Bensham Community Care is well-deserving of this funding. It provides a lifeline from social isolation for many older people in Gateshead.”

Since 2006, the Gateshead Housing Company’s Community Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland has awarded cash and in-kind grants totalling over £500,000 to more than 120 groups across Gateshead.
