Gateshead residents aged 50 and over are enjoying a new look Deckham Community Centre thanks to The Gateshead Housing Company’s Sustainable Communities Fund.
The building, which is the headquarters of Gateshead Older People’s Assembly, has benefited from various improvements which will make the centre more accessible and welcoming for members.
Gateshead Older People’s Assembly aims to help all Gateshead residents aged 50+ to live healthy, active, and fulfilling lives.
Improvements included adding a side gate to the community garden to improve access for volunteers and installing a tap in the garden to make it easier to water the vegetables.
Soundproofing and moveable partitions have been fitted to allow multiple groups to use the hall space at the same time. New chairs, tables and cupboard space have also been added so more people can use the centre.
Gateshead Older People’s Assembly’s Chief Executive, Craig Bankhead, said: “Thanks to The Gateshead Housing Company, we have improved the facilities for our beneficiaries and we will now be able to welcome more people into our centre.”
Richard Finlow, Neighbourhood Housing Manager at The Gateshead Housing Company said: “It’s great to see Deckham Community Centre benefiting from our Sustainable Communities Fund.
“The improvement works have made the centre a much better place for Gateshead Older People’s Assembly to host their activities, making a huge difference to those who attend on a regular basis.”
