A Gateshead Scout group’s HQ has been renovated, thanks to the support of The Gateshead Housing Company and its partners.
1st Blaydon Scout Group, part of Blaydon District Scouts, meets at its Scout hut on Fountain Lane, Blaydon. The group appealed to the housing company’s Community Fund to help with some much-needed refurbishments.
The fund is held by the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.
When The Gateshead Housing Company learned how much the premises was in disrepair, it agreed to carry out £5,000 worth of in-kind renovations.
The extensive works included a new floor and covering, two new toilets, new lights and diffusers, and a hot-water boiler. The guttering outside the front door has been fixed, and some internal fire doors, salvaged from another property, have been installed.
Simon Chrisp, who is Asset Manager for The Gateshead Housing Company and also a Beaver Scout and Explore Scout Leader, said: “Organisations like Blaydon District Scouts are important in giving young people a sense of purpose and helping them build their life skills.”
“The hut previously had no hot water and was very run down. Now it’s been refurbished, we hope that local people will want to hire the premises when the Scouts are not using it, helping the group to generate its own income.”
Helen Laird from 1st Blaydon Scout Group said, “We are really pleased! So much work has been done and the building looks completely different.
“Our members have commented on how much nicer the Scout hut is, and we hope that the improved premises will encourage more people to join.”
