The communal lounge nestled in between Redheugh and Eslington Court in Teams has been made more accessible thanks to the housing company and several charitable organisations.
Teams and Bensham Community Care has been improving the lives of elderly people for 25 years and celebrated their birthday with two official openings of the newly refurbished lounge.
Support from the housing company’s Community Fund, The Henry Smith Charity, The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and Big Local made improvements to the heating system, catering facilities have been the lounge.
With so many people using the building, the charity had to host two official openings so all attendees could attend.
Gladys Mares, who is in her eighties, has been a lunch club member of the charity since it began 25 years ago.
She was delighted to cut the ribbon with the help of MP for Gateshead, Ian Mearns, (see photograph above) at the second official opening.
Around 20 Teams and Bensham residents attend the lunch clubs each day.
As well as the lunch clubs, there is a host of other activities at the centre, including stained-glass-window making, singing, chair exercises, daily bingo and more.
