In November 2017 Gateshead Council called upon residents and businesses to come together to make Gateshead a place where everyone can thrive.
We are proud to share with you a range of things we do at the housing company to support this.
Services for older people
Since 2015 many of our older residents have been enjoying Boccia, an indoor sport similar to French bowls. Boccia helps to improve the health and wellbeing of our older residents in numerous ways, from making new friendships to reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls.
Our HenPower project is now a national success, and the reported health benefits of keeping hens include reducing depression and loneliness. The ‘Hensioners’ have appeared on TV many times talking about the difference keeping hens has made to their lives.
Advice and Support Team
Our Advice and Support Team help customers who approach them directly, and also those who have been referred by another service. Initially customers may need help with a short-term crisis such as fuel poverty, food poverty, or needing help to access the correct benefits.
However, when we work more closely with a tenant, we may identify longer-term health and wellbeing issues such as substance misuse, social isolation, serious debt or family crisis. Our team keeps in regular contact with these customers in case they need further help.
Our Moving Forward programme of courses is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of our customers. Whether you want gardening tips, information on diabetes, or you’re struggling to get to grips with Universal Credit, there’s something for everyone. Have a look at our programme to see what you can try this year!
Newcastle Eagles basketball
The ‘Hoops 4 Health’ project we deliver in primary schools with Newcastle Eagles helps us tackle inequalities among young people. The workshops provide a wealth of information about fitness and healthy eating, and encourage the children to continue playing sports. Each child also receives two free tickets to watch a home game, which they may not have had the opportunity to do otherwise.
